Get down to that market!

I’m always on the look out for healthy food, preferably reasonably priced. Being well and staying well shouldn’t be expensive in my book and to that end I think we have one of the best sources of cheap, healthy food right on our doorstep in the shape of the fruit and vegetable stall on Ramsbottom’s Saturday market.

My reason for putting fingers to keyboard on this issue is down to the satsumas I bought from the market last Saturday. They were delicious! Normally, satsumas are a fruit that I associate with Christmas, as they make a great snack while watching all the holiday TV and also stop me dipping into the sweet tin!

Anyway, I digress. Back to the Saturday market. Not only were the satsumas lovely, but the apples we bought were fantastic too. It’s brilliant to be able to buy great value fruit and vegetables that are not covered in layers of excess packaging – and from real people who smile and talk to you too!

At a time when Ramsbottom is overflowing with supermarkets, I really hope that people will remember to use the Saturday market. The fruit and veg is terrific value and by using local traders you’ll be helping to nurture an important resource for the town.

As the festive season approaches, make sure that you plan to get all your Christmas lunch essentials from our local market. With great tasting vegetables like carrots, sprouts, cabbage, parsnips, turnip and cauliflower on offer at great prices there’s no reason not to shop there – and you’ll have no excuse either for not reaching your five-a-day too!

I totally agree with Andy’s post. Since moving to Ramsbottom just over a month ago we use the market every week or every other week. The fruit and veg are amazingly huge! Last much longer than the supermarket stocks and are cheaper too!

The service is down to earth and friendly, and there is a fish & meat stall too. Where we got some lovely fresh salmon for Boxing day. Our friends go there, and told us about some very reasonable and delicious steaks they got. It really is a reason to live here, I hope the market holders never leave!
