Ramsbottom United v Squires Gate Match Report

The Rams soared to the top of the League with this victory, but it was not as comfortable as the scoreline suggests. Indeed, with half-time approaching and the score goal-less, it was the visitors who would have felt more comfortable, for they edged the first period, until as moment of madness altered the course of the game.

Ramsbottom United v Oldham Boro Match Report

Aspire For Ramsbottom Appeal Gets Off to a Flying Start

Blessed with blue skies and sunshine, the launch of Aspire For Ramsbottom proved to be every bit the community event that its organisers had hoped for. Saturday, October 22 in the Memorial Gardens on Bridge Street saw around 500 people attend the official start of a campaign to raise £10,000 to save the spire of St Paul’s Church. The only spire in the town, it has stood at the very heart of Ramsbottom for 160 years and the Aspire For Ramsbottom appeal committee were keen to involve every part of the community in securing its future.

Ramsbottom v Colne (FA Vase Rd.1) Match Report

The Rams met Colne for the third time this season, and after two tight league games when both sides won on opposing territory, third time round saw United triumph in some style. The strength in depth of the Rams squad was evident, as a number of changes left the home side with a bench full of quality players who would probably walk into any other side in this league.

Ramsbottom United v Flixton Match Report

The Rams were denied a fourth straight league victory by an 88th minute equaliser as the visitors twice came from behind to deny the home side all three points. To be fair, it was no more than they deserved, for as the game wore on, it was Flixton who looked the stronger, and their late leveller was just reward for their second half pressure.

Ramsbottom v Colne Match Report

Ramsbottom United moved up to 4th in the league after a hard-earned three points at Colne on a miserable night in east Lancashire. Having had the better of the first half, the visitors had to dig deep for the last 45 minutes as the home side put them under considerable pressure, but they held firm and gained revenge for an earlier home defeat against the same side.

A Spire For Ramsbottom

Lots of Ramsbottom residents and visitors alike have been wondering about a recent addition to one of our most prominent buildings. For the last couple of months, the tower and spire of St Paul’s Church, Bridge Street have been sporting a very long red ladder. On Tuesday 4 October, the reason was revealed with the unfurling of a huge banner on the side of the tower, proclaiming the slogan “Save Our Spire”.

Ramsbottom United v Maine Road Match Report

On a miserable south Manchester afternoon, these two teams did their best to lighten the atmosphere with an excellent game of attacking football played on a perfect surface before a decent crowd. Ramsbottom United Back to Winning Ways

A much-changed Ramsbottom United line-up took to the field following the disappointing performance against Alsager, and the changes allowed the Rams to end a three-match losing streak against a hard-working and in-form Barnoldswick side. The Life of Pie – In Search of Ramsbottom’s Perfect Pie

I am the progeny of a pie eater. Born in West Lancashire’s traditional pie-heartland, my Dad understands the power of a pie. Not simply as a peerless pastry product, but as a means of conciliation or a gesture of goodwill. When asked by guileless daughters whether he and mum would ever get divorced, the answer would swiftly follow ‘I’d rather have a meat pie’.

Jamie to Run the Paris Marathon

Last week I was privy to an extraordinary sight – Ramsbottom Online’s very own Jamie Scahill stood in a bar with a pint…of Diet Coke. No, he hasn’t given up alcohol for Lent but in little over 4 weeks time Jamie will be digging out his white vest, squeezing into his 1980s Hi-Tec shorts and dusting down his strings of garlic in preparation for the Paris Marathon. On 11th April he will be running in aid of C.A.L.M. with the target of raising an impressive £1,000.

Ramsbottom’s Big Dig… the Plot Thickens!

Last night a public meeting was held at Ramsbottom library headed by Lynn Leyland-Mather to get ‘Rammy’s Big Dig’ underway. With the waiting list for allotments longer than an MP’s expense claim her vision is to increase the volume of local produce grown in the town. Who knows, maybe one day Ramsbottom will become self sufficient. There was no doubting the interest in the project with a large number of residents descending on Carr Street.

The Holcombe Old English Game Fowl Club New Year’s Day

The Holcombe Old English Game Fowl Club’s show has been taking place every New Year’s Day in Ramsbottom since 1843. Originally held at the Shoulder of Mutton in Holcombe, it moved first to the Rose and Crown, and then, in the 1970s, to the Old Dun Horse Hotel on Bolton Road. But when the pub closed last year, the show moved to its current home, the Royal British Legion in Central Street.

Ramsbottom Choral Society Going Strong

The North has long been famous for its strong tradition of amateur choirs, stalwarts of community life that bring together people of all ages for music and socialising. But in today’s busy society, community choirs have to compete with the increasing demands that work, family and social commitments make on people’s time. Sadly, many of them have faded away.
